"Singing with Style is a one of a kind 3 CD vocal training method. Through classic jazz songs, you will learn essentially everything you need to know to develop a unique and interesting vocal style. Although this is a jazz based system, it can be used for any style. I especially recommend this to R&B and pop vocalists who are struggling with riffing and phrasing, as well as singers of any genre who are bored with using scales to warm up. "

"I have dealt with a number of "professionals" in the world of music training and theory, but your no-nonsense explanations, examples and song choices really yield results. For the $25.00, your approach and process must be the equivalent of hundreds of dollars in singing lessons, at least. Thank you, Susan!"

Vocal Style Lessons & Jazz Vocal Warmup

Several years ago a singer who was using The No Scales, Just Songs Vocal Workout contacted me to say that she loved it, but what she would really love would be a similar method that only used jazz songs. I love singing jazz standards, so she struck a chord with me. At the same time, I also wanted to record a vocal style method for singers. So I combined both ideas for Singing With Style, my 3-CD set that has almost four hours of material. In the first half, I teach you good singing technique as you sing through a vocal warm up of eleven jazz standards. In the second half I teach you how to stylize all of the same songs with ornaments, vocal riffs, runs, scat singing tricks, phrasing and much more. So I cover all of the essentials of good voice technique, followed by extensive vocal stylizing lessons. Here’s more information:

Singing with Style Includes:

  • Three CDs of eleven jazz standards played by a jazz trio (piano, bass and drums). The Vocal Warm Up section includes the songs with vocals and instructional introductions. The Vocal Style section includes the songs with more stylized vocals and instructional introductions. CD #3 has the same songs minus the vocals so you can work "without the training wheels." These tracks without vocals can be used as a jazz vocal warm up, or for practicing different vocal style ideas.
  • In the Vocal Warm Up section you'll learn about correct breathing and posture, how to warm up correctly, increase your range, improve your intonation (pitch), build control, build resonance, and improve your tone, volume and vocal endurance. Singer’s diction, the mix register, safe belting, articulation, vibrato development and control are also covered.
  • In the Vocal Style section you'll learn phrasing, improvising, ornaments (licks and fills), pentatonic runs, scat singing, interpretation, melodic variation, vocal texture variations, and all the other vocal licks you've heard singers do but couldn't figure out.
  •  Please note that though I use jazz songs to teach these vocal style elements, you can use everything you learn with other contemporary styles, including pop, rock, R&B, country, singer-songwriter and blues.

Beginning singers can sing through the Vocal Warm Up section at their own pace to learn how to sing correctly, and to develop vocal strength and range. Experienced singers can skip my instructional intros and use the Vocal Warm Up section to maintain their vocal technique and strength. Once you've learned the songs, you can also skip the Vocal Warm Up Section and move directly to working with the Vocal Style section.

Vocal Range

Eb to Eb (two octaves): Alto/High Tenor/Bass range
Bass singers sing an octave below me. You can get an idea of the vocal range of the songs by listening to the audio samples. "Baby Baby All the Time" has the lowest notes of all the songs. "So Nice" has the highest notes. Sopranos and baritones can also use Singing With Style by singing a few note substitutions to add or subtract low or high notes: I explain how to sing note substitutions in the vocal style section.
